The
seventh renewal of the "official" SWATCH FIVB World Championships will be held
from June 26 through July 5 as the planet's top Beach Volleyball players return
to the Vaagen Harbour courts for the 11-straight season where the annual events
as become Norway's top sporting event during the summer months. The 2009 SWATCH
FIVB World Championships presented by ConocoPhillips will feature both pool and
single-elimination competition as the top 48 men’s and women’s teams compete for
the US$1-million in prize money. Over 150,000 spectators are expected to view
the international Beach Volleyball action as competition will be held on three
courts, including 8,000 and 1,500-seat areas. Pool play for each gender will
feature 12 pools of four teams each vying for 32 spots in the single-elimination
phase of the competition. Pool play will be held from June 26 through July 1
followed by the opening single-elimination rounds July 2-3. The quarter-finals
and semi-finals will be played July 4 with the medal matches July 5. The 2009
SWATCH FIVB World Championships will be televised internationally with more than
80 hours of "live" transmission. The television broadcast will be the "biggest"
in the history of the Stavanger event as the world finals will be aired on
Norway's state commercial free channel NRK. Pictured below are the gold
medal teams from the 2007 SWATCH World Championships in Gstaad, Switzerland -
Todd Rogers, Phil Dalhausser, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh of the United
States. Both teams also won the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour event in
Stavanger.

NORWAY & BEACH VOLLEYBALL - For the
past 10 seasons, Norway has hosted SWATCH FIVB World Tour events as the
past two years the Scandinavian country has staged a grand slam stop in
Stavanager and an “open” tournament in Kristiansand. Stavanger has been
the site for SWATCH grand slam double gender events the past three years
as the event was only a men’s tournament for the first three seasons
starting in 1999. In the men’s competition, Brazilian teams led by
Emanuel Rego won the first nine Stavanger events before Americans Phil
Dalhausser and Todd Rogers reversed the trend in 2008 when no tandems
from the South American country reached the “final four”. American women
have won four of the seven Stavanger women’s events with Brazilians
winning twice with Greeks victorious once. Athens 2004 Olympic champions
Emanuel and Ricardo Santos have won four of the past six men’s titles in
Stavanger. Emanuel has won seven of the 10 Stavanger gold medals,
including the inaugural title in 1999 with Jose Loiola and a pair of
crowns with Tande Ramos in 2001 and 2002. Americans Jen Boss and April
Ross overcame a pair of pool play setbacks to upset China’s Jia Tian and
Jie Wang to win the 2007 gold medal. Boss and Ross also became the
lowest-seeded team (29th) to win a SWATCH FIVB World Tour title.
Vassiliki Arvaniti and Vasso Karadassiou captured only SWATCH gold medal
by upsetting Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil in
the 2005 finale. With the gold medal in 2005, Arvaniti became the
youngest player to capture a SWATCH gold medal (20 years, 3 months, 15
days) at the time. Norway’s top men’s finishers in Stavanger are fifths
by Vegard Hoidalen and Jorre Kjemperud in 2001 and 2002. Nila Ann
Hakedal and Ingrid Torlen placed fifth in 2004 and 2008 for the top
finish by a Norwegian women’s team in Stavanger. Hakedal and Torlen are
the only Norwegian team to medal in the Scandinavian country with a
second-place finish at Kristiansand in 2008. |
