SWATCH-FIVB WORLD TOUR TAKES TWO-WEEK BREAK

Lausanne, Switzerland, September 12, 2007 - After 15 weeks of competition in 14 countries on three continents, the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour takes a two-week break before staging the final double gender event on the 2007 calendar in Fortaleza, Brazil.

The first-ever double gender event in Fortaleza, the September 25-30 competition on Praia de Iracema will be a celebration of Brazil dominance on the 2007 international Beach Volleyball circuit.  Prior to this year’s stop, Fortaleza staged five men’s only events (1994-1997, 2002) and three women’s only stops (2000, 2001 and 2004).

Reigning Olympic champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos will celebrate their fifth-straight SWATCH season point’s title after clinching the crown at the final European FIVB event on the 2007 calendar with a gold medal win this past Sunday over Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde of Argentina.

It was only appropriate for Emanuel and Ricardo to secure the point’s title against the Argentineans since Baracetti and Conde netted the 2002 season tour championship before the Brazilians started their streak in 2003.  For Emanuel, it marks his ninth season as being part of the top men’s team on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour while Ricardo reached the No. 1 spot for the sixth-time.

For 2007, Emanuel and Ricardo won six gold medals in 14 SWATCH starts to increase their FIVB title total to 30 for 69 events.  The Brazilians, who also won the Pan American Games gold medal this past July in Rio de Janeiro, captured FIVB grand Slam stops in Paris and Austria while placing fourth at the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Gstaad, Switzerland.

On the women’s side, the Fortaleza stop could crown Brazilians Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca as the top team on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour.  With China’s Jia Tian and Jie Wang not competing in the Brazilian event, Juliana and Larissa can clinch the season point’s leadership for the third-time with a Praia de Iracema podium placement.

Also 2007 Pan American gold medal winners, Juliana and Larissa won five SWATCH titles in 12 starts this season to increase their FIVB title to 19 to rank behind all-time leaders Adriana Behar/Shelda Bede of Brazil (31) and Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh (29).  With a combined age of 49, Juliana (24) and Larissa (25) have amassed over $1.2-million in winnings for 50 SWATCH events.

The Fortaleza event is also part of the qualifying process for the Beijing Olympics where a team’s best eight finishes through July 20, 2008, will be counted to determine the 24-team fields for the 2008 Summer Games.  While Emanuel and Ricardo have a 400-point lead over Brazilian compatriots Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes for the men’s top spot, Juliana and Larissa are tied with Tian and Wang for the women’s leadership with 5,200 points for eight events each.

The 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour champions are determined by calculating the points for a team’s best 12 finishes for both men and women based on 75 percent of the 17 events staged for each gender this season and rounded down.  The Fortaleza stop is the men’s season finale while the women end the 2007 campaign with an event at the start of November in Phuket, Thailand.
