Grand Slam Marseille

When players and fans cruise into Marseille this year they will be hoping for a repeat of the fabulous Beach Volleyball events that this stop on the World Tour has already hosted.

This will be the ninth time that the sport’s elite will battle it out at Marseille, with this year even more up for grabs – more prize money and more bonus points for the ones that emerge at the end of the week’s competition as “Kings” and “Queens” of the Beach and take home the USD 400,000 prize money.

Last year Marseille belonged to the Argentine pair Baracetti-Conde who dominated the Big League last year including taking the World Championship title in Klagenfurt, Austria, where they again met their Brazilian adversaries Emanuel and Tande in the final. This year the best Beachers in the world will descend on the French port city – representing more than 40 nations and delivering 176 matches in the six days of competition.  Marseille is by the sea but the sand for the courts still has to be shipped in – 2,000 tons, in fact.

With the wealth of experience organizers in Marseille have already gathered, it was a natural step for the World Tour stop to become, together with Klagenfurt Austria, a Grand Slam event. In 2002 there will be a VIP Tribune for 400 guests, and a VIP restaurant, a champagne bar, a cyber café and loads of entertainment.
