take gold
Second-seeded
Jose Loiola and Ricardo Santos completed a
Brazilian sweep of the gold medals in the
Beach Volleyball competition at the 2001
Goodwill Games in Brisbane by defeating
2001 World Champions Mariano Baracetti and
Martin Conde from Argentina.
They
scored a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) victory in 35
minutes over the top-seeded Argentineans
to split the US$ 30,000 first-place prize,
while the Argentineans settled for US$
24,000 and the silver medal
By
winning both the mens and womens
2001 Goodwill Games gold medals, Brazil
duplicated the feat they achieved at the
1998 Goodwill Games in New York where
Para/Guilherme won the mens title and
Adriana Behar/Shelda won the womens
crown.
In
the bronze medal match, USA captured its
third straight Goodwill Games medal when
fourth-seeded Metzger/Wong defeated their
American rivals Fonoimoana/Heidger 23-21
and 21-19 in 52 minutes.
