Presentation

The peaceful island of Porto Santo is located 46 km northeast of
Madeira and is an idyllic Atlantic hideaway with a 9-km stretch of golden, sandy
beaches.
Two mountains mark each end of the island which was, in fact, the
first landfall of the discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco, who named it Porto Santo
(Holy Port) in gratitude for being blown there during a storm in 1418.
Since 1991, the
Madeira Volleyball Association has been organizing Beach Volleyball tournaments
on this lovely island and in 2001 and in 2002 were played the very first FIVB
Beach Volleyball Exhibition tournaments featuring Sinjin Smith, Ricardo, Loiola,
Blanton, Fonoimoana, Baracetti, Conde, among many other players.
In 2003 a women’s FIVB
Exhibition tournament took place with participation from grand women athletes
such as Cook, Sanderson, Shaylin, Renata, the Yanchulova sisters, Maxwell and
Lassard. And last year the island of Porto Santo had the pleasure of hosting the
2004 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships U-21, presented by Swatch.
Welcome to PORTO SANTO!
